E-DRUG: Multinationals out to make higher profits in developing countries (8)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear All,

These companies are all aware of their marketing techniques and have no reason
to contribute to reducing prices in these countries. They however do not
realize the amount of harm they cause with these expensive medicines as
patients may not afford these medicines. Most patients using these medicines
are on medical schemes but run out of benefits at some stage in the year. This
usually results in patients not using some of these medicines for certain
periods.

Unfortunately in Botswana they do not have laws that protect patients from
benefits running out of essential chronic medicines.

In South Africa they have PMB (Prescribed Minimum Benefits) which ensures that
patients are not denied medicine benefits for a list of chronic conditions, as
long as the medicines are approved by the schemes. It is compulsory for medical
schemes to pay for approved medicines that are part of PMB. This ensures that
patients are guaranteed medication for the approved chronic conditions.

Hopefully countries can strengthen their laws so that they are not being ruled
by multinationals. The other way out is the medical schemes set rules so that
they can have a bigger influence in drug pricing.

Regards,
Ajay (BPharm)
Botswana
