E-DRUG: Multinationals out to make higher profits in developing countries (2)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear E-Druggers

Ajay has given some examples of how multinational Pharma uses the
generic market in South Africa to maintain their market share. An
internet search related to his message yielded an MBA research
dissertation of Matthew Igbinovia entitled 'The perceived benefits of
generic versus branded medicines' from University of Pretoria, Nov 2007.

A logistic regression analysis of responses to a cross-sectional survey
of 391 retail pharmacy clients in Gauteng province in South
Africa showed women were more aware of generics than men and 55% agreed
generics were as effective as brands. Multivariate analysis showed cost, and
quality were factors in choosing between brand or generic, but not safety.
Personal income was also associated with the choice they made.

The background section of the dissertation directly addresses some of Ajay's
concerns and is useful reading for those interested in this topic.

Regards

Douglas
