POSITION: REGIONAL COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER
LOCATION: Based at the Rio Office with frequent travel to the region (focusing 
namely on Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Mexico)
Full time position

Immediate Supervisor:
Reports to the Head, DNDi Latin America
Functional reporting to the Head of Communication and Advocacy, DNDi Geneva
Relationship with other jobs:
- Interact with the Advocacy team in Latin America
- Interact with the FR team in Latin America
- Supervises interns
- Supervises one assistant communication position ( temporary)
- Works closely with communications and advocacy teams in Geneva and other 
regional offices in particular the NY office

Overall objective of the job:
To contribute to DNDi's global communication strategy and to develop, 
coordinate and manage the communication strategy and activities in Latin 
America, in particular to:

* Develop a communications strategy and plan of action for all DNDi activities 
in Latin America according to the general DNDi action plan for Communication & 
Advocacy

* Responsible for managing communication strategy for Chagas disease and 
coordinate its implementation with the global communications team

* Develop strong media relations with national and regional media

* Reinforce DNDi's corporate communications by developing communication tools 
to emphasize DNDi's activities in Latin America

* Position DNDi as a regional and global entity with successful and active 
development in Latin America

* Lead DNDi advocacy activities in Latin America, including boosting government 
engagement in R&D; ensuring access to medicines; creating and sustaining a 
favourable environment for R&D including strengthening the regulatory 
environment in Latin America; positioning of Latin American decision makers 
with respect to international initiatives, etc.

Main duties and responsibilities:

Strategy and Planning
* Contribute to defining DNDi's global strategic objectives for communications 
as part of DNDi's international communications team

* Raise awareness about DNDi's activities in Latin America and develop adequate 
communication tools in order to raise the profile of DNDi Latin America within 
the region and contribute to raising the profile internationally of the Chagas 
Clinical Research Platform

* Lead the development and implementation of the DNDi Latin America-specific 
communication plans, including all efforts to increase awareness in Latin 
America of DNDi's activities, accomplishments, concerns, expertise, and values 
through the media, print and digital publications, conferences, public 
education and advocacy campaigns, etc.

* Work in close collaboration with the other areas of the team in DNDi Latin 
America, particularly the Advocacy, the Fundraising and R&D teams, to ensure 
clear support and synergies in terms of communication
* Work in close collaboration with relevant departments of DNDi in Geneva, as 
well as partners regionally and worldwide, to ensure a comprehensive and 
coherent communication strategy for DNDi in Latin America
* Monitor and analyse progress towards established goals as articulated in the 
strategy and annual action plan

Corporate Communication tools & publication

* Support the territorial development of the Regional Office

* Produce & develop corporate communication tools in conjunction with the 
global DNDi communication team to highlight & profile DNDi's activities among 
different audiences in Latin America & worldwide

* Review and selects materials produced by DNDi globally for adaptation and use 
in Latin America

* Select and prepare editorial content and material for print and electronic 
publications of DNDi headquarters and especially for DNDi Latin America, in 
addition to the Chagas Clinical Research Platform
Media

* Develop and implement all media activities that target Latin American 
audiences and national and regional media outlets
* Work with the global communications team on specific international media 
relations
* Work closely with DNDi's international network of communication professionals 
to develop and maintain good working relationships with key journalists and 
editors of Latin American media and international correspondents in the region
* Generate features and hard news angles to raise the profile of DNDi and 
highlight DNDi's R&D projects
* Field, direct and select responses to media-related inquiries and researches 
and pitches stories to media on DNDi issues and projects
* Assist and coach DNDistaff with preparation for media interviews, public 
speaking engagements, and presentations
* Write or translate and disseminate press releases in conjunction with DNDi's 
global communications team
* Develop articles and/or op-ed for publication in Latin American media
* Outsource specific services to local service providers (medical writers, 
graphic designers; printers; etc.)

Conferences and Events

* Coordinate and organize DNDi presence at key scientific conferences and 
public speaking events taking place in Latin America and ensure a strong 
scientific profile at such events, in close coordination with the DNDi 
scientific communications manager

Internal Communication of the regional team and network
* In coordination with Human Resources, create a dynamic process for updates 
and information sharing with the team spread between Rio and the region
* Maintain a database of contacts for the regional office (public relations, 
media, friends of DNDi, Regional Board of Directors, Conselho Fiscal..)
Interface with Advocacy
* Participate in formulating advocacy messages related to the global and 
regional Advocacy strategy developed by the Advocacy team
* Field issue-attention in the region for specific advocacy activities of DNDi
* Develop opportunities for feature articles, interviews, presentations, and 
other public relations activities that promote awareness of DNDi, its R&D 
projects, and its advocacy efforts

Interface with Fundraising
* Participate in formulating coherent Fundraising messages related to the 
strategy developed by the FR team
* Develop appropriate tools and for Fundraising (campaigns, actions and other 
communication material)
* Drive the development of the regional institutional accountability tools 
(annual report...)

Interface with Research and Development
* Participate in formulating R&D messages related to diseases in the regional 
scope and the activities developed in the region
* Interface with the Chagas Clinical Research Platform communicate on its 
activities
* Facilitate the local production of scientific communication
Qualifications
* Minimum of seven years' professional experience in communication (journalism, 
media relations, production of communication materials etc.) with a public 
health background
* Excellent written and verbal communications skills and ability to work 
effectively as part of an international, multi-cultural team
* Excellent organizational skills and proven ability to produce high quality 
results under tight deadlines, while simultaneously managing multiple projects 
and assignments
* Deep understanding of and commitment to poverty-related global health, 
scientific research, medical innovation, and access to medicines issues in 
developing countries, especially in Latin America
* Independence, initiative, good judgment, strong interpersonal skills
* Experience working internationally, preferably with a non-governmental 
organization
* Education: Master's degree (M.A.) or equivalent
* Language: Fluent written and spoken Portuguese, Spanish and English
* Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with publishing, database, 
and web editing software

Working Terms and Conditions
The RCM will be based in Rio de Janeiro and will therefore attend all team and 
coordination meetings on a regular basis as well as be prepared for work 
related traveling.

Workplace: DNDi Latin America's office in Jardim Botânico - Rio de Janeiro 
-Brazil

Time employment: 100% (full-time position)

Mobility: Frequent visits to sites and representation trips (~20% of the time)
Type of contract: Indeterminate Contract (with a 3 month probation period)
