E-drug: South African court case (cont)
---------------------------------------------
Update on the South African court case PMA vs. SA government
----------------------------------------------------------
[Summarised from Afronets with thanks. Information provided by
Christian Labadie <CLabadie@t-online.de>.BS]

Below you will find four reports from SABC news and the Guardian
Weekly unlimited on the South African court case between 39
pharmaceuticals and the South African government.

Three majors signs in favour of the South African government came
from Europe:

- (i) from the European Union:
see the answer of the EU-Commissioner on Trade, Pascal Lamy, to
Medecins sans Frontieres; post of e-drugs:
http://www.healthnet.org/programs/e-drug-hma/e-drug.200103/msg00040.html

- (ii) from Germany:
where the finance-oriented newspaper "Die Welt" published last Friday
articles favouring the South African government (Germany is home to
three headquarters of pharmaceuticals involved in the trial: Bayer,
Boehringer-Ingelheim and Schering)

- (iii) from France:
where the French workers-union CGT of Avantis (Hoechst Marion Roussel
and Rhone Poulenc Rorer merged to form Avantis), the union speaker
Laurent Ziegelmeyer supported the March 5th International day, de-
nounced the "sanitation apartheid" role played by the pharmaceutical
industry, and demanded that Avantis directors withdraw from the court
case; see e-med:

Zackie Achmat said to "Die Welt" that he doesn't take anti-retroviral
drugs that aren't available to other patients at South African
general hospitals because it is a question of "right to live" and of
"human dignity".
