This workshop was organised by the Regional Drug Information
Centre in Lombardy (at the Mario Negri Institute) with
financial support from the European Commission and moral
support from ISDB. It was an unprecedented and valuable
exploration of the diversity of existing centres providing
information on drugs, diseases or services, how they might
better meet the needs within health systems and of the public,
and how their activities might be linked or harmonised. They
cannot work well in isolation or in competition. It was
obvious that much collaborative research will be necessary to
identify needs and gaps, and to develop the best ways of

two final contributions, by Charles Medawar and by the
editors. That will whet the appetite for skipping around
among the others. The report can help all information
