ICASA Roundtable: Strengthening African civil society participa-
tion in the UNAIDS programme coordinating board

Over the past few months, Non-Government Organisation (NGO) rep-
resentatives on the UNAIDS programme coordinating board (PCB)
have become increasingly concerned about the lack of active in-
terest and participation by African NGO networks and civil soci-
ety leaders, about the workings of the PCB and the benefits that
NGO representation on the board have for the communities that we

It is important that leaders of national and regional civil so-
ciety networks and organisations in Africa, come to an apprecia-
tion of the value of the UNAIDS board and strengthen their col-
laboration with NGO representatives serving on the board. It's
equally important that PCB NGOs create and build communication
mechanisms with civil society constituencies across Africa, in
order to be able to genuinely represent their perspectives and
interests on the UNAIDS board. It is also necessary that NGO
leaders get abreast with latest policy decisions and recommenda-
tions of the UNAIDS board that will affect HIV/AIDS responses at
national levels.

For this reason, the current African NGO reps on the PCB are or-
ganising a roundtable during the forthcoming ICASA 2005 holding
in Abuja in December. The roundtable, titled, 'Strengthening Af-
rican civil society participation on the UNAIDS PCB' will hold
as follows:
