[afro-nets] National Reproductive Health Consultative Summit 2004

National Reproductive Health Consultative Summit 2004

16-19 February, 2004
Abuja, Nigeria

Strengthening RH in the Context of Sustainable Development
Venue: Abuja Sheraton Hotels and Towers

The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) has lent
support to the continent's economic renaissance. This action was
unique because it reflects the common will of African leaders to
urgently address the issue of poverty on the continent and put
African economies on a sustainable growth and development
through active participation in the global economy.

The implementation of NEPAD hinges on multifaceted approaches to
poverty eradication, one of which is the improvement in health
through reduction of maternal mortality and child mortality,
tackling the HIV/AIDS pandemic, improving upon the status of
women and promoting social development and the participation of
marginalized groups especially women.

Concerted effort towards the implementation of Reproductive
Health strategies and programme by various governments, organ-
ized private sector, donors and NGOs in Nigeria has been dis-
jointed, and at best not integrated. This peculiar problem has
resulted in programmes not sufficiently impacting on the health
status of the citizens. In the spirit of NEPAD this defect calls
for a pragmatic intervention to take stock of the prevailing
situation and chart a new direction for the future dispensation
in order to entrench a viable reproductive health programme in

This forum will bring together major stakeholders including In-
ternational experts in Reproductive Health to take a comprehen-
sive review of RH programme in Nigeria and determine the support
that each partner will require in order to forge ahead.
