PSI Builds Bridges to Religious Leaders in the Battle against AIDS
------------------------------------------------------------------

Population Services International (PSI) invests time and energy
in building bridges with the religious leaders of the communities
and countries in which its programs work. Religious leaders often
have an influential role in shaping opinions, attitudes and be-
haviours and, therefore, PSI seeks to engage them in the struggle
to reverse the AIDS epidemic. Because condom promotion is often
part of HIV/AIDS prevention messages, PSI has sometimes had to
fight the misconception that they are promoting promiscuity. On
the contrary, PSI promotes abstinence and fidelity foremost and
forming partnerships with religious leaders helps support those
messages. Whether it be Moslem leaders in West Africa, Christians
in Zambia or Buddhist monks in Laos, PSI recognizes the larger
role religious leaders can play in the fight against AIDS.
