New reproductive technologies and infertility treatment in Africa
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Despite Africa's burgeoning population, infertility is ironically
a growing personal and social problem. Infertility rate in sub-
Sahara Africa is among the highest in the world and ranges from
15 - 30% compared to reported rates of 5 - 10% in developed coun-
tries. Irreversible reproductive tract damage has been identified
as the commonest cause.

There is a growing body of scientific evidence demonstrating the
feasibility of high technology treatment of infertile couples in
Africa. Friday Okonofua, a well regarded Obstetrician and Gynae-
cologist from Nigeria, examines the scientific evidence and
raises policy issues regarding the advisability of use of limited
public health resources to support the development of high-cost,
advanced technology programs in treating infertile couples in Af-
rica relative to targeting low cost preventive efforts to improve
reproductive health in both men and women.

Enjoy and voice your opinion.
